BITCH. It’s a powerful word, it can be used as a noun, verb or adjective, and it’s almostuniversally misunderstood by non-native English speakers. It can be playful, sexual or violent. It can be offensive, neutral, and even used to empower woman. But in 99% of the cases, “Bitch” does not translate to “Prostitute.” Wikipedia says:
“BITCH”是一個強大的詞,它可以用作名詞,也可以用作動詞或形容詞,它幾乎受到了所有英語為非母語的人誤解。它可以是好玩的,與性別有關(guān)的,或者暴力的。它也可以是無禮的,中立的,甚至能夠用在女人身上。但是在99%的例子中,“Bitch” 不能夠翻譯成“妓女”。維基百科說:
The word “bitch”, literally meaning a female dog, is a common slang term in the English language, especially used as a denigrating term applied to a person, commonly a woman. It often refers to someone who is belligerent, unreasonable, rudely intrusive or aggressive.
單詞“bitch”,字面意思指的是一只母狗,它是英語中常用的俚語,尤其是作為詆毀語用到人身上,通常是女人。它通常指的是好斗的、不可理喻的、粗魯?shù)厝肭值幕蚝霉舻娜恕?/p>
Let’s dive in. Here is how BITCH is used:
讓我們來一探究竟吧。下面是如何使用BITCH的方法:
Bitch Almost Never Means “Prostitute”:
Bitch 基本上從來沒有“妓女”的意思:
Accept that the translation of “son of a bitch” is misleading and does not represent hownative speakers use the word bitch in other situations. Even in “son of a bitch,”I would venture say that the expression doesn’t make me think of mother or woman in the same way that it’s translated in Spanish and Portuguese (“hijo de puta/ filho de puta”).
人們常常接受的“son of a bitch” 的翻譯(“婊子養(yǎng)的”)是容易讓人誤解的,并且它不能夠完全代表母語為英語的人在其它情況下是如何使用bitch這個單詞的。即使是“son of a bitch”這句話,我敢說這種表達(dá)按照同樣的方式翻譯成西班牙語或是葡萄牙語(“hijo de puta/ filho de puta”),也并不能讓我想到bitch指的是母親或是婦女。
The only exception to this is in American ganster rap music, which uses the word “bitch” in a much more derogative way (prostitute), often referring to women as “bitches and hoes” (hoe means prostitute). More on this below:
唯一例外的是《美國黑幫》說唱音樂,它里面單詞“bitch”有衍生的更加貶義的用法(妓女),通常把女人比作“婊子和妓女”(hoe指的是妓女)。下面有很多例子:
Bitch Literally Means Female Dog. There’s nothing really to explain here. It’s quite literal and this is probably the only non-colloquial use of the word.
Bitch的字面意思是母狗。這里沒什么好解釋的。這個完全是字面意思,并且這可能是這個單詞唯一的非口語化的用法。
Calling a Woman a Bitch (3 different meanings):
稱一個女人為 Bitch(3種不同意思):
1.An annoying/ unpleasant woman: It’s definitely not polite to call a woman a bitch, but in most cases, it’s not as bad as “whore.” For example: (a) He didn’t leave a tip at the restaurant because he said that his waitress WAS A BITCH. (b) I don’t know what’s wrong with her. She’s BEING A BITCH.
一個煩人的/讓人不愉快的女人:稱一個女人為bitch絕對是不禮貌的,但是在很多情況下,它并沒有“whore(妓女)”那么惡劣。例如:(a)他沒有給餐館小費,因為他說他的女服務(wù)員WAS A BITCH(是個煩人的女人)。(b)我不知道她怎么了。她就是BEING A BITCH(讓人不愉快)。
Note: “She is a bitch” (permanent) is much more offensive than saying “she is being a bitch” (temporary state). All the same, to call a woman a bitch is never nice, so watch your mouth.
注意:“She is a bitch.”(永久的,現(xiàn)在時)比說“she is being a bitch”(臨時狀態(tài),進(jìn)行時) 更加無禮。同樣地,稱一個女人是個bitch是很不友好的,所以注意你的言辭。
2.A Prostitute: Rap music seems to be the only context where “bitch” means “prostitute.” Rap music’s use of “bitch” is a controversial, complicated issue which I’m not going to even try to explore right now.In my personal opinion, rap music, in general, demonstrates totally inappropriate treatment of women that nobody should imitate. See the “unified bitch theory “ as put forward by famous rappers, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.
妓女:說唱音樂即Rap似乎是唯一使用“bitch” 表示“妓女”的語境。說唱音樂中“bitch” 的使用是個有爭議的、復(fù)雜的問題,這個我不打算立刻探究清楚。在我個人看來,一般來說,說唱音樂里這種用法展示了完全不恰當(dāng)?shù)膶Υ说膽B(tài)度,任何人都不應(yīng)該模仿??纯粗枋諨r. Dre和Snoop Dogg提出的“unified bitch theory ”。
3.An Empowered Woman: An emerging feminist definition that is becoming more common these days: “In a feminist context, it can indicate a strong or assertive woman, one who might make men feel threatened.” Check out this popular Meredith Brooks Song, “bitch” which demonstrates exactly this.
一個有權(quán)利的女人:這是一個新興的女權(quán)主義的定義,最近也變的越來越常見了:“在一篇關(guān)于女權(quán)主義的文章中,它能夠表示一個強勢或者自信的女人,這個女人可能會讓男人感到威脅?!笨纯戳餍械腗eredith Brooks的歌曲,“bitch”,這首歌的歌詞很好的詮釋了這個意思。
Calling a Man a Bitch
This is often playful, but can be mildly offensive. It means that the man is subservient, that he does everything for another person, and has compromised his dignity. You often use the possessive adjective. For example: I do everything for my boss. My friends at work tell me that I’M HIS BITCH. Sometimes people say “he’s being a little bitch” tocommunicate that he’s extremely unpleasant, not easy to deal with.
稱一個男人為bitch,這個通常是開玩笑的,但是也略微有些冒犯的意思。它表示這個男人是屈從的,他做的每件事都是為別人做的,并且放棄了自己的尊嚴(yán)。你通常使用的是所有格形容詞。例如:我做的一切都是為了我的老板。我工作了的朋友告訴我,我是我老板的奴隸。有時候人們說“he’s being a little bitch”來表示他非常讓人不快,很難打交道。
As an Adjective: Bitchy
You can call a man or a woman a bitch (with different meanings, as described in 3 and 4), but the word bitchy (applied to both men and women) has the sense of “annoying” or “unpleasant.” For example: You’re being really bitchy today. Why can’t you be nicer to me? This is still not very polite language and would probably be offensive.
作為形容詞:Bitchy。你可以稱一個男人或女人是 bitch(它有不同的含義,3,4中講過了),但是單詞 bitchy (男女通用)帶有“煩人的”或者“令人不愉快”的感覺。例如:你今天真的很讓人不高心。你為什么就不能對我好點?這仍然是很不禮貌的說法,并且有可能冒犯到別人。
Bitch as a Verb (Complain)
In this colloquial use of the word, “bitch” means “complain.” It is often used together with “moan” (gemir) to negatively potray someone (or yourself) who is complaining too much. This use is not really offensive (depending on the tone) and can be used informal situations. For example: I wish people would just stop BITCHING AND MOANING about corruption in politics and do something about it.
“bitch”作為動詞(抱怨)?!癰itch”的這種口語用法表示“抱怨”。它通常和“moan” (抱怨)一起使用,來負(fù)面的描述某人(或者是你自己)抱怨太多。這種用法并不真的太冒犯人(取決于語氣),并且可以用在非正式場合。例如:我希望人們可以停止哼哼唧唧的抱怨政壇腐敗而是做點什么。
Bitch Someone Out
means to yell at someone in a really negative way for something they did. For example: My boss BITCHED ME OUT for being 10 minutes late. To use this expression is not offensive, but language is very colloquial.
Bitch someone out表示因為某人做的事情,非常消極的對他們大喊大叫。例如:我的老板因為我遲到了10分鐘就對我大喊大叫(BITCHED ME OUT)。使用這個表達(dá)不會很冒犯別人,但是這種說法是非常口語化的。
Bitchin’ as an Adjective
This means that something is good, awesome, cool, etc. Don’t confuse this with bitchy (explained above). For example: The Real Life English party was BITCHIN’! Following the rules of grammar would make this “bitching ” but we say “bitchin.” This is another colloquial expression that isn’t negative.
Bitchin’作為形容詞。這個詞表示某物很好、很棒、很酷,等等。不要把這個和 bitchy(上面解釋過)弄混了。例如:The Real Life 的英語晚會很BITCHIN’(很棒的)!按照語法規(guī)則應(yīng)該是“bitching ”,但是我們說“bitchin”。這是另外一種不帶負(fù)面色彩的口語化表達(dá)。
Life’s a Bitch
A common way to communicate that life is complicated, not easy, etc. The expression has this sense of confronting the difficulties, but also recognizing the unpleasant nature. Other examples of this use are: Calculus is a BITCH. Monday morning is a BITCH.
Bitch Please!
This expression (see picture below) communicates that you don’t believe what the person says. Urban Dictionary defines it as follows: Used when someone/tool makes a stupid comment, or just as a fun way of saying no. This is a common colloquial expression which originated in the ghettos and has reached mainstream middle class American society. People often use this colloquially in a playful way (the title of this article), but as Urban Dictionary points out because of the origin of “bitch please” amongst inner-city prostitution rings, it always carries a connotation of violence.
Bitch Please!
Bitchslap
輕拍某人,使之冷靜(小編注:有一部影片也用過此單詞做片名,常見翻譯為“女子大亂斗”)
This is to “slap” somebody with the back of your hand in order to calm the person down and make them see things straight. This is another use of “bitch” that originated in the ghettos and was popularized by rap music and black culture. People often use this termin a playful way.
這個表示為了讓某人冷靜,并且直面某事而用手背去“輕掌嘴”某人。這是來源于貧民區(qū)的另外一種 “bitch”的用法,現(xiàn)在被說唱音樂和黑人文化推廣開來。人們通常用好玩的方式使用這個詞。
To Ride Bitch in the Car
坐在車后座的兩個人中間
To ride in the middle of the back seat of the car.
坐在汽車后座的中間。
